Memorial opened for Disaster of Kumbakonam fire Accident

2008110752500401Kumbakonam: A memorial constructed at a cost of Rs.60 lakh in memory of 94 schoolchildren, who died in a fire at a school here in July 2004, was inaugurated by Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday.

Located on 10,000 sq. ft, the memorial has a pillar, ‘dhyana mandapam’ and park. Students of the Kumbakonam Government Fine Arts College designed the memorial, which depicts children in flames and wailing parents.

Mr. Stalin offered floral tributes at the ‘dhyana mandapam’ and placed a wreath at the memorial.

He consoled the bereaved parents, who had gathered at the memorial.

The parents demanded that July 16 be declared a local holiday.

They wanted the construction of houses at Koranattukaruppur for the families of the deceased children to be speeded up.

Mr. Stalin honoured Kumbakonam Municipal chairman S.P.Thamizhazhagan, Principal of the Kumbakonam Government Fine Arts College Chandrasekaran and lecturers of the college Ravi, Arularasan, Sivaramakrishnan for completing the memorial.

Later, he declared open additional building, constructed at a cost of Rs. 37 lakh, at the Kumbakonam Municipality. Minister for Co-operation Ko.Si.Mani, Union minister of State for Finance S.S.Palani Manickam; and Thanjavur Collector M.S.Shanmugham were present.
